How to Make Matte Liquid Lipstick Last All Day

Matte lipstick is the ultimate power move—but only when it stays put. There’s nothing worse than applying your favorite shade in the morning and watching it fade, crack, or flake before lunch.

So, how do you get that long-lasting, flawless finish that holds up through coffee, conversation, and everything in between? We got you.

Here’s our go-to guide for making your matte liquid lipstick really last:

1. Start With Smooth Lips

Matte lipstick won’t sit right on dry or chapped lips.

Do this:

    •    Exfoliate gently with a lip scrub or a soft toothbrush

    •    Follow up with a lightweight lip balm (but not a glossy one—more on that below)

Pretty Smack Pro Tip: Exfoliate the night before for best results the next morning.

2. Blot Off the Balm

Hydration is key, but too much moisture can break down your matte formula.

Before applying lipstick, blot any extra balm with a tissue. Your lips should feel soft—not slippery.

3. Apply One Thin Layer First

Don’t go in heavy right away. One thin, even swipe will give your lipstick room to dry down properly.

Let it set for 30–60 seconds before deciding if you need a second layer.

4. Don’t Rub Your Lips Together

We know it’s tempting—but resist!

Rubbing can disrupt the smooth finish and lead to cracking. Let the lipstick do its thing. Pretty Smack’s formula is designed to dry down evenly without needing to be “worked in.”

5. Use a Lip Liner (Optional—but a game-changer)

A good liner adds definition and can help lock in the edges, especially if you’re wearing a bold or dark shade.

While we’re still working on Pretty Smack Velvet Lip Liners (they’re coming!), a neutral or matching liner can make a big difference.

6. Keep the Gloss Away

If you want long-lasting matte, don’t top it with gloss.

Gloss will break down the formula and cause smudging. Stick to matte if you’re going for all-day wear—and save the shine for later.

7. Touch Up the Right Way

If you need to reapply, wipe your lips clean first and reapply fresh. Layering matte on top of old product can get crumbly fast.
